Lords and Nobels

Below the monarchs on the feudal pyramid were the nobels or lords. These powerful nobels, because of the decline of the monarchs, gained significant power over their own land. Lords were considered vassals of the monarch, and the monarch, in turn would give the lord a fief, or manor to control. Lords lived on the manor in a castle. Some clergy were also considered part of the nobility as well, especially bishops and abbots. Nobels (except clergy) spent their time hunting, going to battle for their king or manor, and watching their serfs to ensure the work of the manor was completed. Ladies- the wives of the lords- were busy having children, sewing, and supervising the servants.
