- After the fall of the Western half of the Roman Empire, Western Europe was broken up into many smaller kingdoms.
- ​One of the biggest was that of the Franks – a Germanic tribe that took over much of what is now France and some of Germany.
- Other smaller and less powerful kingdoms were established from the many barbarian invasions.
- Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 768
- Charlemagne becomes crowned as the Holy Roman Emperor in 800 by Pope Leo III who needs his protection and support
- He rules most of Europe from 800-814
- Europe is split following his death
