  • After the fall of the Western half of the Roman Empire, Western Europe was broken up into many smaller kingdoms.
  • ​One of the biggest was that of the Franks – a Germanic tribe     that took over much of what is now France and some of Germany.
  • Other smaller and less powerful kingdoms were established from the many barbarian invasions.
  • Charlemagne became king of the Franks in 768
  • Charlemagne becomes crowned as the Holy Roman Emperor in 800 by Pope Leo III who needs his protection and support
  • He rules most of Europe from 800-814
  • Europe is split following his death
