Knights

Ranking beneath the lords were the knights, who were vassals to their lords. Nobels could also be vassals to a king as well, which made their status very complicated. Knights were trained at a young age, sometimes as young as seven, in the art of warfare. They promised to uphold the code of chivalry, which included obeying one's lord, respecting and protecting nobelwomen, aiding others in trouble, and fighting fairly and honestly in battle. The lord possessed large amounts of land that was divided into smaller fiefs and awarded to knights in their service. In exchange, knights would guard the castle and all those who lived on the manor. Knights were often younger sons of lords and nobels; they would start life in a castle as a Page and then move up to the role of Squire before becoming a knight.
